Conservative statement on Keystone XL cancellation
January 21, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calgary, Alberta – Greg McLean, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, released the following statement regarding the cancellation of Keystone XL:
“Canadian energy workers need a serious government that will champion their jobs, pipeline projects, and get our world class products to market.
“Canadian oil is produced to the highest environmental standards in the world and the government needs to acknowledge and champion the industry’s pioneering efforts. Canadian oil and gas producers are global environmental leaders. But instead of advocating for our workers and their families, the Prime Minister, once again, opted to sit on his hands.
“Yesterday’s cancellation of the Keystone permit is a victory for the international oil cartel. It is a loss for the thousands of workers across Canada who contribute to producing the world’s most environmentally responsible oil and gas and the companies that supply them. It is a loss for the many Indigenous partners that have been reaching to participate in Canada’s economic opportunities.
“This cancellation is also a loss for the world’s environment. American refineries that would have benefited from environmentally advanced resources may now choose less environmentally responsible inputs.
“I am truly worried about the Prime Minister’s silence regarding the impending crisis for Canadian energy in response to the Governor of Michigan’s attempt to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5 Pipeline. It delivers over half of Ontario’s crude oil supply and transports two-thirds of the crude consumed in Quebec. Will the Prime Minister stand up for Canadians this time?”
